Drumming Legend: Dave Grohl
With rumors circulating about the Foo Fighters disbanding after 20 plus years of existence, fans across the world freaked out! Me included, the first thing I could think about was, what’s next for Dave Grohl? Rumors began circulating after Dave’s performance at this year’s Oscars. A stellar solo performance on guitar, it seemed almost obvious that Dave would go solo right!?
Well not exactly. They quickly dispelled rumors in typical Foo Fighter fashion in this video
So why bring this up? Well like a lot of you, I believed the rumors. Even though I was shocked at the news, a side of me was content after considering the amazing musical career Dave Grohl has had. A true Rock Star. As a drummer, Dave Grohl has been a great ambassador for the instrument. Inspiring and influencing drummers across the world during the Nirvana days, there is a lot to be said about what Dave Grohl’s done.
Dave’s drumming has been on countless records. Some might argue the validity of his drumming skills, when compared to more technical drummers, but I argue that Dave’s approach to drumming is just as good. Composing drum parts as a songwriter, Dave has always created distinct recognizable drum parts that have suited songs very well. After all, isn’t that what it’s really about? Creating music?
His hard hitting style embodies everything “Rock and Roll.” What makes Dave Grohl such a great drummer and influence is all the little things. The first is the volume and consistency of his playing. More apparent in the studio, Dave does a killer job of hitting the drum consistently with the same volume every single time, which is crucial in the studio. He also consistently hits the center of the drums, which produces the best tones. These skills are highly sought after.
Dave plays for the situation. His grooves and fills are simple but are played masterfully. Ultimately making the song better. Some of the tracks that come to mind are for example, “Smell Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana. One of the greatest modern day rock songs, the opening fill is so recognizable and suited the song so well. Another song that you might not know Dave played on, is “The Collector” by Nine Inch Nails. The groove is so recognizable and really made the song.
I think there is a lot to learn from Dave’s playing, not just as a drummer, but as a musician. After all, he’s done it so well for so many years. An influence I continue to pull from, I look forward to what the future holds for him. A side of me was looking forward to seeing Dave slamming drumsticks once again on something new after the alleged Foo Fighters split. But since there is no split, the other side of me is content with him continuing to lead the rock legends the Foo Fighters have become.
