Often times I find myself spending countless of hours behind the drumset aimlessly practicing some of the most tediously boring exercises or concepts on the planet…so it may seem. Why?
I ask myself that very question from time to time. Is it because I have a dream of becoming a “Rock Star”, or becoming the next Lars Ulrich? I kid I kid. The illusion of fame and glory enticed me as a kid to pick up the drums, but that isn’t why I play the drums today.
Many times it’s easy to lose focus as to why you truly play an instrument. The sooner you can identify why, the sooner you can exploit it and really begin to make progress and have fun with your instrument.
I play drums because it makes me happy. As a stress reliever, or past time, whatever it truly is, IT makes me happy. The moment I realized that I put all other reasons aside to play drums and really began to make sustainable progress. I started to enjoy practicing drums because the goal wasn’t to become a “Rock Star” anymore, it was about being happy.
Play drums because you enjoy it. Make all the other stuff secondary. Who knows, maybe someday you’ll be the next Lars….or not lol. Regardless, have fun. That’s what really matters.
