Does Winter Break = Drum Break?

The holidays are upon us.  As things come to a screeching halt from the daily grind and nasty weather it’s hard to find the motivation to do anything. Maybe you’ve mustered enough energy to get out of bed and make it to your couch. Mission accomplished.

Wait, but this is no way to make progress in our drumming is it!? Yeah I suppose. BUT maybe there is progress we can make away from our precious drums. Rather than beat yourself up for not finding the time or energy to practice your drumming these holidays, embrace it.

If you manage to peel yourself off the couch and get some practice in, awesome! But if you can’t, here are some ways you can make progress away from your drums these holidays.

Take the time you have away from your drums to “recharge your batteries”. Our bodies aren’t the only ones that need a break, so do our minds. Time away from our instruments can be a good thing. Clear your mind and gain focus, time away reignites your desire to play.

Listen to music. After all, music is why we play. Take your time away from the kit and find new music. Often times nothing can be more powerful than gaining inspiration from a killer tune which will carry over to your next practice session.
Last but not least, Enjoy your families. After all, it is the holidays. They put up with us year around. We spend countless hours in the practice room making noise. It’s the least we can do! Take notice of those around you and appreciate them. Your drums will be there waiting for you when you get back.
